From Employed to Self-Employed…..The Dream, The Reality, and Doing it Right.

For many, the dream of being your own boss is irresistible. The idea of more freedom, flexibility, and control over your own future is a powerful motivator. Whether it is a great idea you are passionate about, a skillset you have and want to monetise, or simply a desire to leave an uninspiring job behind, moving from employment to self-employment is an option more and more people are exploring.

But while the destination may be rewarding, the journey can be tougher than expected.

There is often a perception that self-employment is the fast track to success and satisfaction. The truth is that it is rarely fast, and it is rarely easy. Many underestimate the time, the cost and the resilience needed to build a sustainable business. Success often takes longer than hoped, costs more than planned, and it can be personally exhausting, especially if you leap before you look.

Far too many ventures are started without proper research, planning, or financial foresight. Often, people with brilliant skills as technicians or unique skills step into self-employment without the business knowledge needed to thrive. Good people make unnecessary mistakes and often ones that could have been avoided with some sound advice and guidance early on.

Sometimes, self-employment is a reactive move. An escape from a workplace where you feel stuck or unappreciated. Ironically, some employers, even (often unknowingly) discourage this transition in the way they speak about business, as a way to retain key staff.

But the good news is, that with the right support, you can take that step and do it well. A good business coach can help you test your idea, plan effectively, manage the risks and build a strong foundation. It is about moving from hope to a clear strategy and replacing guesswork with the right actions.

Self-employment can be one of the most rewarding decisions you will ever make, but success is rarely a solo journey.
